Transport
Lead Administration – Northern Ireland

At the first British-Irish Council summit, it was agreed that the Northern Ireland Executive would take the lead on the topic of Transport.

The British-Irish Council Transport Ministers last met in Belfast on 9 February 2006.
At that meeting, Ministers reviewed progress on:

• the mutual recognition of driving disqualifications;
• the mutual recognition of driving offences less than disqualification; and;
• research into drugs and driving.

An exchange of letters took place between the UK and Irish Ministers on a proposed bilateral agreement on the mutual recognition of driving disqualifications.

Ministers also agreed to further work in a range of areas:

• completion of the process to achieve mutual recognition of driving offences;
• a feasibility study into the scope for greater co-operation between the UK and Ireland in dealing with drivers, from each other’s jurisdiction, who commit infringements less serious than those resulting in disqualification;
• further co-operative working in the area of drugs driving;
• examining the scope to promote sustainable travel;
• exploring areas for co-operative working in improving transport accessibility to meet the needs of older people and people with disabilities.
